Radiotherapy & Oncology

The Department of Radiotherapy & Oncology came into existence at Kasturba Medical College in 1974 under the guidance of Dr.TMA Pai, when no other cancer centers were present in southern Karnataka. Purely out of his zeal to help the common man who could not afford the cost of treatment, he started the department of Oncology. The cost of treatment was subsidized to be within the reach of an economically poor patient. This helped a large number of patients who would otherwise have had to go to Mumbai or Bangalore. In the first year of starting the department, around 400 patients were treated.

In 1992, a full-fledged cancer Hospital was built with the state of the art treatment facilities the help of the generous aid from the Shamdasani Foundation, a non-profit service organization run by the devotees of Shirdi Saibaba under the leadership of Sri Shamdasani, and financial and technical assistance from the T.M.A. Pai Foundation.
